Karen McCoy and Robert Carl

Sound of The Sea/Silenced Sea, 2010
Indigenous plant materials, sand, stone in variable dimensions; sound track by Robert Carl
Kansas City, Missouri & Hartford, Connecticut

Sculptor Karen McCoy and Composer Robert Carl have returned to SKW 2010 for a grand collaborative installation encompassing sight, sound and audience interaction. Nestled along the rocky shore of Ft. Zachary Taylor, Karen has fabricated and placed 2 listening trumpets; the first amplifies sound and is made of indigenous plant materials sealed with tung oil and resins, and the second is made of sand and other earthen materials that acoustically absorb sound. Robert has masterfully recorded the dynamic sounds emanating from and within Karen’s installation and its environment, remixing and composing fresh and salty time based audio elements.

Robert Carl is an internationally recognized and published composer. He is currently chair of the composition department at the Hartt School, University of Hartford.

Karen McCoy is a Professor of Sculpture at the Kansas City Art Institute, MO.

Karen and Robert participated in SKW 2009
