Ron Fondaw

“Given, a Devise for Seeing a. failing waters, b. eliminating gases”
Adobe structure, mixed media
 8’ x 15’ x 8’

Inspired by the history and imposing shapes of Ft. Zachary Taylor and the surrounding geographic area, Prof. Ron Fondaw has returned to SKW 2010 to create a remarkable dioramic device; a masterful homage to Marcel Duchamp’s infamous mixed media assemblage Étant donnés.

“Given” provides various levels of meaning depending on your vantage point. While standing inside Ft. Taylor and looking west through the central triangular opening of the sculpture, you are gazing out into the Gulf of Mexico in the direction of Ft. Jefferson National Park in the Dry Tortugas.   Upon closer inspection of the sculpture, a peephole is located in the main body under the triangular opening, where a solar powered light illuminates a dreamlike underwater scene. Ron’s  intention is to draw attention to the environmental concerns of our reef, and the political condition at this moment in time.

Fondaw was a professor of art at the University of Miami from 79-94, and currently a professor of sculpture at Washington University, in St. Louis, MO.  He has received many distinctive awards and fellowships, including the Guggenheim and the National Endowment for the Arts.  He last participated in SKW 2006
