Karlis Rekevics
Karlis Rekevics' works are both an object and a place: closely tied to the real world and, at the same time, unreal structures. The sculptures take their cues from Key West architecture as a starting point, which are then filtered through the artist’s specific memory, drawings, and construction method. Rekevics casts these works directly on site, and they have a complicated poetic logic that is both familiar and extraordinary.
Rekevics has exhibited in some of the most prestigious spaces in the US and abroad, including P.S. 1 and the SculptureCenter, both in Long Island City, NY; the Whitney Museum at Altria, in New York City; The Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College, NH; and more. He studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture from 1992 to 1997. His work was featured on the cover of the July/August Sculpture magazine in 2007. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
