Canopy Triad represents a departure from Key West artist Larry Estridge's
usual works of expressively bent steel. While spending the summer in Utah,
the artist experimented with bark-beetle infested pinon pine, one of the few
naturally occurring species of tree in the high desert regions of the
Southwest. The bark beetle is devastating this fragile ecosystem. Ruminating
on the relationship between man and nature in another delicate environment,
Key West, Estridge created his work by collecting local wood following the
permitted cutting and trimming of subtropical trees by a certified arborist.
