Originally from New York, painter and sculptor Barbara
Vogel moved to Key West in the early 80s. She writes, “This
piece [Oolitic Queen] is carved from Miami Oolite—the
very ground we walk upon. Beautiful pieces of this quarried
limestone can be found elevating the original conch houses.
The yielding limestone is itself elevated in this piece,
as it goes from sub oceanic, to subterranean, to supports,
to sculpture. Long may it reign.”
